Be brave enough to face your Art

February 4, 2013 — 16 Comments

You need to be brave to be an artist.  And, most of us have been running away from our art.

Seth Godin

Art is not only paint brushes and clay.  Art is the original work of your life.  It is the work that you must do, or, you die on the inside.

Deep down, we are all artist.

I don’t have to explain it to you.  You know when you are creating art, because . . .

You feel the rush of joy when you create.

You also feel the pressure of anxiety when you are “just working.”

People don’t go after their art, because it scares them.

Seth Godin says that we have all been lied to.  And, most of us have bought into the lie.

What is the lie?

  1. You are not an artist.
  2. Art is not worth making.
  3. Art is reserved for the creatively elite.
  4. Art is only for certain mediums.
  5. Art leads to a life of sin and pain.
  6. Art leads to the poverty house.

These are all lies.

What is the truth of art?

  1. You are an artist.
  2. The world needs your art.
  3. You are creative in ways that no one else can be.
  4. Art can be produced on any medium, and anywhere.
  5. Art leads to joy and satisfaction.
  6. Art rewards us all.

How do you get in the art pool?

Start by sticking your toe in the water.

By your recommendation last week, I got the book and started reading it. I’ll try to leave a voicemail for the show. Definitely enjoying the encouragement it is giving!

Don’t feel like you have to read the whole way through to participate.

    • Matt McWilliams

Dude. You will have a question by page 10 :)

I feel like art is like the story of the Potter and the clay in the Bible. God puts you together and makes one for a certain purpose in life to fulfill. The art may range from the business world, ministry, or plain and simple art of being the stay at home mom. We all have creativity, ranging in different aspects. When we fail the creator just starts all over again, and that is the way it is in life period. Sometimes the failure of our artistic culture, can cause us to get up and work harder to seek out what and why we failed in the area we submitted to. Everyone has a gift of art, they just have to find it and put it into enforcement. I know that can be difficult sometimes, but its there. Would love to read this book and see if I am heading in the right direction on this post. Maybe you can send a little feed-back.

I never believed I was an artist until one day at the beach, about 40 years old, I made a sand sculpture. Then I tried other art forms. I believe God created us in his image, and part of what resides in us is a burning desire to be proud of what we’ve created. This is my son and me on the Saint Francis River in Missouri. I did it two years ago.

    • Todd Liles

      Wow! That is very impressive!

So true bro. Love some Seth…always intriguing to read people’s ideas that are based on his. Hopefully his ideas will brew new ones in us too.
