Do not take your success or criticism too seriously

January 4, 2013 — 14 Comments

Yesterday my company, Service Excellence Training, became an official provider of training services to a very big company.

Do not take your success or criticism too seriously

This is when you say to me,

“Don’t take yourself too seriously.  Success is a blessing from God.”

Thank you for that reminder.  I appreciate your wisdom.  And, saying “We are an official training company for a Very Big Company” really sounds cooler than it is.

I’m thrilled to be trusted by a company of it’s size, but there are a lot of official providers of “this thing” or “that thing” when you are talking about lots of zeros.  Still, it is a really great resume builder.

No matter the size of a company, I’m blessed anytime someone votes on me with their money.

But, I found myself, for just a moment, taking myself just a little bit too seriously.  It didn’t last too long.  Maybe about 5 minutes.

As I usually do when I bring on a new client, I did the social media thing to let people know.  Only this time, I didn’t say the name of the company.  I said,

Today Service Excellence Training, LLC became an official provider of training services to a $(very big) company. God is so good. My team has worked so hard. And, my clients are so amazing. Thank you all!

I felt that was a good combination.

  • Announce the event
  • Give God the Glory
  • Thank my team
  • Thank my clients
  • Then, get back to work.

In the original post, I put the actaul size of the company.  It was a lot of 0′s.  I took out those details on purpose when I (re)wrote this blog.

Now, maybe it was not saying the name, or maybe it was all the those 0′s, but this got a lot of responses.  And, it was not all good, not all bad either.

Folks wanted to know:

  • Who is the company?  OK, I caused that.  It wouldn’t have happened if I had said the name.  (I can say the name, I just don’t want to until I have really cool video testimonials to post.)

I also got a lot congratulations.  (Cool, thank you.)

But, I also got a really vicious email.  It was mean.  Seriously.  This person was telling me all about myself.  I did not realize I was such a goofball until today.  I’m glad he cleared that up!  Interestingly, I don’t know who he is, but he does have a good looking resume.  I’m sure he is smart and talented.

Critics math kicked in: 1,000 compliments + 1 criticism = 1 criticism.

This is when you say to me,

Don’t take the criticism of others’ too seriously

So, I wrote him back, and wished him the blessings of the Lord.  I really do wish him well, today.  Years ago, I would have screamed back.  That does no good.  So, I hope he gets the will of God for his life.

Question:   Should I have not announced the new client without the name?

Have you ever fallen into the “too serious” trap?

My choice would be to NOT name the client. Remain humble and thank God for all the blessings he bestows upon you.

Too serious? Yep: I’ve been in that box before. That’s why one of my words for 2013 is “LAUGH”. I’ve decided to not sweat the small stuff this year and laugh more. I invite you to do the same. : – )

    Have a GREAT weekend sir!

Thanks for your input,  and you are right.   I do need to laugh more.   That’s great advice!

I think you did right. Not naming the company is the way i would have gone as well. Congrats on your success bud, looking forward to seeing much more from you!

Thanks Jared.  I feel the same about you.

I look forward to you speaking at one of our events

Congrats on your big win! It’s an interesting question. You probably shouldn’t have put their name in your post (especially without permission). I think you were trying to rejoice and express gratitude through your tweet. We always need to keep our motives in check. We don’t always get it right. Praise God for the big win!

I have their permission to use their name. I’m waiting to show the testimonial videos after the class. I was just trying to be grateful, I just found it interesting how one person could get so bent out of shape about it.

“Don’t let the bastards bring you down.” Keep your chin up. Be grateful to God for the success. And continue to keep your motives in check.

I’m so grateful. Thanks for the support brother. Is that Winston Churchhill? It sound like it could be.

    Son,
Congratulations and I am so proud of you! You are not a goof-ball by no means. First of all of the company gave you permission and you were going to present a video any way, what difference did it make to go ahead and share the blessing? I know the Bible says some things you do in secret, but that is not what that scripture pertains to. I don’t know who the person was, but if he has a company that is in competition, I would call it jealousy. There is nothing wrong in sharing success with a humble heart and knowing you as my son, I know the excitement and passion you work hard to excel at. When I work hard and feel like I have done my best, then reward comes my way, I love to share what God has given me, with a humble spirit,(not boastful or prideful). I do not take critisim well at all, when I have worked my but off while the others set back and expect the world to pat them on the back and say well done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So I think with the permission you got, it was ok to share, so go ahead and continue to rise and shine like the star you are and always will be in my eyes. You know I am very arrogant when it comes to my kids, but you know what I will pray for this person in an un-spoken request. Keep on, keeping on. I AM PROUD OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

If I’m not careful I can easily fall into the “too serious trap.” I have not remember to relax and be down to earth.

I think mentioning the name of the company depends on your relationship with them and if they even want to be mentioned. I personally would rather do a great job at training until they are mentioning me on social media and other CEO’s.

Congratulations man!!! So happy for you and I can’t wait to hear more news like this as the years progresses.

      Good advice Dan.  Thanks brother.
