Failures have talent and passion

December 28, 2012 — 21 Comments

You are going to be a failure if you just have talent and passion.  It takes more to be successful in life.

Failures have talent and passion

ccPenywise – Failures have talent and passion

The Passion Trap

1.  Passion convinces you that you have a good idea.

2.  Passion gives you energy to work very hard.

3.  Passion stops you from quitting.

4.  Passion ruins the lives of people without talent.

People with tons of passion will work all the way until absolute failure.  That is very noble, but also really stupid if you don’t have talent.

The Talent Trap

1.  Talent convinces you that you are better than you are.

2.  Talent makes you lazy.

3.  Talent makes you a quitter.

4.  Talent ruins the lives of people without passion.

People with tons of talent will work as little as possible to avoid hard work.  That is really smart, but will never allow you to reach your full potential.

Success is not about your talent or passion.

Success is about the lack of talent and the great passion of the other people.  Failures focus only on their own talents and passions.

Your ability to step into the gap of the weakness of other’s will determine your level of success.

The passion of the people you hope to serve will determine whether or not you succeed.

What if Elvis or Michael Jackson were trying to make it today?

Elvis was The King of Rock and Roll.  Michael Jackson was the Prince of Pop.

There is no denying that they both still have a very strong brand.

But what would happen if they were trying to make their rise to fame today?  Would our society accept their type of talent?

Think of it another way, would the society of the 1950’s send Kim Kardashian to fame?  I’ll let you explore that thought in the comments below.

So What is the Secret to Success?

The secret of success is in your head.  That’s it.  You decide the following things, and you will know when you are winning.

1.  Write down what you are passionate about:  Money?  Power?  Love?

2.  Figure out your talent.

3.  Who will support you in that talent?

4.  How will you ignite their passion?

If you can figure out these simple things, then you can live the life that you deserve.

By the way, I am a person that lives this life.  Here is an interesting fact:

God allows me to serve a small group of highly motivated business owners, and they value my talents and passions.  It doesn’t take 1000’s of people to get excited about you to make it work.  A very small, very loyal group will do just fine.

Question:  What makes you successful?

I never thought of the talent trap before.

That may have been a subconscious reason why I always thought of myself as a “hard worker” and “not naturally gifted” at golf. It motivated me to work harder and let my talent kick in.

    • http://www.toddliles.com/ Todd Liles

Golf for me is a pleasure. And, I’m horrible at it!

Are you a really good golfer Matt?

      • http://www.mattmcwilliams.com/ Matt McWilliams

I play once a year now. Maybe.

But I was ranked as high as 14th in the country in college.

I can’t stand playing now because I’m not nearly as good.

        • http://www.toddliles.com/ Todd Liles

14th in the country! Wow. I’m impressed.

As I’ve considered my life, I’ve been able to be thankful for the times of failure. They kept me from the talent trap. They made me realize that you’ve got to work for something. You’ve got to put your head down and be determined. The talent trap used to get me (not that I’m so talented, but maybe just lazy, haha), but I’ve hopefully escaped.

Loren – I have been caught by the talent trap too. And, if I’m honest, it was because I thought “I can wing this.” Bad mojo for sure.

What do you think about the idea I put out there of:

“Your ability to step into the gap of the weakness of other’s will determine your level of success.

The passion of the people you hope to serve will determine whether or not you succeed.”

Wow! I find myself like this from time to time. At my job, I’ve gotten to the point that I know my job well enough that it doesn’t take much time or thought to get the job accomplished right. I also like to be learning new things, so I can get bored after I have learned “everything” about my job (I know I haven’t learned everything, I get myself to think that). I have started to work with others and teach them to get better.

      Joshua,

It is a really good thing to have an expert level at a skill.  Great work.
Its a good thing you have your creative outlet with the blog and working with others.

This is an awesome realization Todd! It truly does take consistent passion and talent to achieve success. If you only obtain one or the other for a specific project or field, I think it’s a good indication you need to be doing something else.

I think that is the best part of my job – being in demand planning and forecasting keeps you very humble! I’m paid to be wrong. But seriously, this made me think because I had never thought of the talent trap before…and having talent can make you lazy. I know in school I could get A’s without trying very hard, and that is exactly what happened – I did the minimum to get the grade.

    • http://www.toddliles.com/ Todd Liles

There are times when doing the minimum is wise. Just past that point of diminishing return. Otherwise, it is a time trap

    Son,

The dangerous part of having talent, is not realizing when the talent has taken control over the individual. A talented person is great, but one needs to realize this gift is from God and not of one’s self. Whether it be a professional singer, great business leader or whatever the profession is, one can set site on themselves only to set themselves up for a great fall. A tree has roots, which is that tree’s foundation=the talented person also needs to spread their roots to grow or they will fall. When one looses site of their prospective, their talent traps them and it is hard to unlease that trap. They get high-minded, boastful, and yes lazy only to fall into their own trap. This cause the talent and passion to escape out of boundaries until the individual realizes what has happened and fixes it. One should base and establish a strong foundation so the cracks want began to crumble, resulting in failure.

Do you think it is talent , or pride that takes over?

      • http://www.facebook.com/myladydonna Donna Jackson

I would say that definitely pride takes over. Let me give you an example. i personally know a awesome pianist and her testimony to me was, one Sunday morning she set down to play the piano and her fingers would not even hit the right notes, because she had been praised and up-lifted to the point she forgot where her talent came from which led to pride in her-self. She said she silently ask God at the piano for forgiveness and she went on to play the piano with no mistakes. I have seen many singers fall because of pride. I believe in re-warding a person, but one should be real careful, especially if that individual is a novice, whether it is in business or any type of work. I personally believe that is what happens to a lot of famous people, pride sets in and they think they are invincible and satan grabs them. The Bible says pride comes before destruction. Talent is great when one stays on top. Give give credit where credit is due!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a great post Todd. A essential combination to success is talent, passion, and hard work. Each is important to moving froward. I once heard, “Hard work beats talent when talent does not work hard.” Once we start putting these areas into our life we will attract like minded people to join us.

    • http://www.toddliles.com/ Todd Liles

The like minded people part is huge.  Success without connections is impossible.

    Son,
This is such a great blog had to go one more time.Since the Garden of Eden, God’s plan includes the fact that each person’s wages, rewards were closely related to their life’s work. So in proportion the quality and quantity of their work, faithfulness, dedication plus the investment determines the reward.A man that fears the Lord is one who will take his talent on the job, reach for the opportunities and resources and strive to excel. The world is seeking to be praised and honored, but they are in for a disappointment. It is the man that does not take his talent for granted so that pride does not set in, this is the man who fears the LORD.There is nothing more greater than a man that has invested his life in his business and seesthe reaping that creates the honorable reward with pride!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So talent can also be connected with pride in the right way. I don’t think there is anything wrong with being proud of an accomplishment with the right heart.
