Dear Reader,

Years ago, I walked into a business that had the flashiest branding I’d ever seen.

Gleaming trucks. A bold, modern logo. Perfect color schemes. Everything looked like it belonged on the cover of a trade magazine.

And yet… something felt off.

The techs were polite but stiff. The owner seemed distant, busy scanning his phone for the next big marketing trend. And when customers called in, the conversations felt… transactional.

It was all brand, but no belief.

I’ve seen the opposite too.

A shop with an outdated logo, trucks that had seen better days, but a team that spoke from the heart. They believed in what they did. They believed in serving people, not just selling to them.

And customers believed right back.

That’s the thing about brand identity.

It isn’t your colors, your logos, or your fonts. Those are just memory triggers. The real brand is what people feel when they think about you, and whether they trust you enough to follow you anywhere.

In this episode, Roy and I talk about the heart of brand identity:

  • Why belief (not logos) builds brand gravity
  • How oversharing or getting political can sink your business
  • The myth that your style guide is your brand (it’s only 5%!)
  • Why predictability kills ads, but consistency saves them
  • And how timeless storytelling curves shape the brands people remember

This episode is for anyone who wants more than just a good-looking logo.

It’s for people who want to build trust, loyalty, and a brand that lasts longer than any trend.

I hope you enjoy it.

-Todd Liles

In This Episode, You'll Learn:

  • Why brand identity is built on beliefs, not just visuals
  • How oversharing or getting political can break your brand
  • The true role of a brand’s visual style guide (it’s only 5%)
  • Why consistency matters—but predictability kills ads
  • The secret of timeless storytelling curves in advertising

Episode Chapters & Summary

Belief is the Core of Branding

“People need to know what it is you believe in. And if they believe in what you believe, then there is alignment and they will be attracted to you.”

Roy sets the foundation: your brand isn't built on colors, logos, or slogans. It's built on belief. If people don't know what drives you, they'll never connect—and they certainly won't follow you into new markets or big changes.

Key Takeaways:

  • A brand starts with what you believe, not just what you sell
  • People connect through shared values
  • Clarity about your purpose attracts the right customers
  • Belief creates brand gravity that advertising amplifies

Purpose vs. Product Focus

“What you're doing is shifting from product focus to purpose focus.”

Todd and Roy discuss how businesses drift into selling products instead of communicating purpose. Roy explains that purpose-led brands endure, while product-led brands get stuck chasing the next transaction.

Key Takeaways:

  • A brand's mission should guide every decision
  • Selling purpose creates loyal customers, not one-time buyers
  • Don't let systems distract you from your core message
  • Purpose-driven content builds authentic relationships

The Visual Style Guide Myth

“At most, it's 5% of a brand.”

Roy slams the idea that logos or fonts define a brand. They're only memory triggers—your true brand is what people know and feel about you. Visual changes won't rescue a weak brand, but they can reinforce a strong one.

Key Takeaways:

  • Visual elements can't replace emotional connection
  • Rebranding visuals is safe only if your core brand stays intact
  • Don't confuse a new logo with a new brand
  • Emotional memory beats graphic design every time

The Danger of Political Signals

“It's not about you knowing what you're doing. It's about everybody else understanding what you're doing and why you're right.”

Roy and Todd use Elon Musk as a cautionary tale. A brand can lose half its audience overnight when its actions conflict with public perception—even if intentions are good. The lesson: speak to what your audience cares about, and know what to leave unsaid.

Key Takeaways:

  • Public perception defines brand reality
  • Oversharing personal beliefs can alienate customers
  • Neutrality is often the safest brand position
  • Know what not to say, not just what to say

Stories Shape Memory—and Brands

“Good advertising will only accelerate what was going to happen anyway.”

Roy ties it all together with timeless storytelling. The best ads don't invent new stories; they amplify truths already there. He explains why consistency in voice matters and how “story shapes” create emotional resonance and lasting brand impact.

Key Takeaways:

  • Great ads amplify truth—they don't manufacture it
  • Predictability kills attention, but consistency builds trust
  • Story shapes tap into universal human psychology
  • Consistent storytelling becomes your brand's identity
